Marsha Lycan, a Division 1 college coach, recently shared a post on X that pulls back the curtain on how college recruiting really works, and it’s a must-read for any family navigating this journey:
This post makes one thing crystal clear: Recruiting is a data problem. Coaches can only recruit players they know. And if they haven’t seen you, or don’t even know you exist, you’re not getting a call on June 15.
But that doesn’t mean your shot is gone. It just means you have work to do.
Here’s what this tells us:
So what should families do?
If you think you’re at a school’s level, you have to introduce yourself. Send a short, personal email. Share game film. Include your summer schedule. Make it easy for them to assess and follow you.
Because if you’re not in their “top group” right now, the only way to get there is by helping them see who you are and how you play.
And yes, this is exactly why we built Sendcoach, to give families the tools to take control of the outreach process. Because relying on luck, or assuming your talent will speak for itself, just doesn’t cut it when there are thousands of names in the pile.
Let this post be a wake-up call. If you’re serious about playing at the next level, don’t wait for a coach to find you.
Make it easy for them to find you. Try Sendcoach today!

June 15th can be overwhelming for student-athletes and families. While often seen as a milestone, it’s really just the beginning of a longer recruiting process that unfolds at its own pace.
IMG’s acquisition of SportsRecruits clarifies Sendcoach’s mission: to empower families and clubs with authentic, independent student-athlete outreach.
